PLATFORM
MANAGING COVID-19
Adjusting to the COVID-19 pandemic over the past year was extremely difficult for all of us. One year later, after many trials and tribulations, we have started to figure out ways to continue Civil Club operations despite the pandemic. With a possible return to campus on the horizon, we have reflected on how COVID-19 has impacted us and ways to transition back to campus life.
We will:
-
Ensure transparent communications between the Faculty and the Department and the students about new decisions concerning COVID-19.
-
Run the club in a safe manner through mostly online events and support services.
-
Adapt general volunteer positions better to a socially-distant platform.
EXTERNAL RELATIONS
The civil engineering community in Edmonton is very tight-knit. We want to foster these interpersonal relationships between students and industry professionals to help students build a strong network early in their careers.
We will:
-
Improve relations with technical clubs such as GNCTR and EIA.
-
Provide outreach for these clubs through Civil Club media.
-
-
Improve relations with our professional counterparts.
-
Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, Edmonton Section (CSCE)
-
Young Professionals (CSCE YoPros)
-
-
Increase interactions between students and Civil Club sponsors.
STUDENT RESOURCES
The Civil Club normally offers a multitude of services, including a textbook exchange, lockers, club spaces, events, and more. Our most notable events also include the Popsicle Stick Bridge Competition, Specialization Panel, Spring Roll Sale, and Bar Nights. With some of our services not available at this time, we have some new and exciting initiatives in mind to create a community amongst civil engineering students.
We will:
-
Support the Civil Club Executive Team in creating meaningful and fun events.
-
Improve on mentorship through personal connections with mentors.
-
Create a mentorship program matching lower year students with upper year students.
-
-
Create more general volunteer opportunities and introduce a volunteer appreciation every semester.
-
Department wide Discord server.
-
Encourage involvement early on to create a robust community amongst civil and environmental engineering students.
-
Hire a MacEwan transfer student representative to facilitate bonding between current U of A civil students and incoming transfer students.
-
-
If elected, we will bring coffee and donuts to the next time there is outdoor Survey School.
CLUB OPERATIONS
The Civil Club is made up of the following portfolios: Operations & Finance, Student Life, Technical, Coordination, and Communications. We hope to open up more positions for all those who wish to get involved with us while providing the necessary support to our existing team. We will also provide the necessary support and resources to the Civil Club Executive Team and encourage them to realize their own goals and initiatives.
We will:
-
Mandate Diversity and Inclusivity Training for the Civil Club Executive Team.
-
Create an Advocacy Committee to increase awareness of social injustices and issues in civil engineering and create a more welcoming atmosphere in the CEESS.
-
Committee will conduct consultations within the civil engineering and formulate a response to social/world events on behalf of the Civil Club Executive Team when necessary
-
Committee will seek opportunities to educate and inform membership about relevant issues.
-
-
Designate a sustainability/spaces coordinator to liaise with the faculty and create more green features around NREF.
STUDENT CONSULTATION
The overarching goal of the Civil Club is to advocate for all students within civil and environmental engineering. If elected, we will be open to any input regarding any events or services you would like to see for the upcoming year.
We will:
-
Make GEER week more inclusive and accessible for everyone.
-
Students should be consulted when making important GEER Week decisions (theme, movie, band, etc.)
-
-
Ensure representation of environmental engineering students in the Civil Club.
-
Release surveys to gauge student interests and needs at the beginning of each semester.
-
Students can give ideas for new events.
-
Also welcome is feedback on current club operations and initiatives.
